Anchor Opens Haynesville Shale Facility

In order to service our customers in the emerging Haynesville Shale play in Northern Louisiana, Anchor Drilling Fluids has opened an oil-based mud facility and stock point near Minden, Louisiana, approximately 25 miles east of Shreveport.

The Haynesville Shale is a rock formation containing hydrocarbons lying approximately 10,500 to 12,000 feet sub-surface in northwest Louisiana and East Texas. In some areas, it is referred to as the Bossier Shale. Sub-surface, the formations dip southward toward the Gulf of Mexico, thus the formation is found deeper the further south wells are drilled.

Shale rock is very tight with little permeability, a measure of the rock's ability to allow a liquid or gas to pass through it. While shales also usually have low porosity, voids that potentially hold hydrocarbons, the Haynesville shale has surprisingly shown higher porosity than other gas producing shales.

The Haynesville shale is an unconventional drilling environment. New and difficult geologies must now be explored and developed to maintain domestic natural gas production in the wake of declining production, steeper decline rates and increasing demand.

These complex environments include both unconventional natural gas production from shale, rock and tight sands, as well as conventional production from much deeper wells. Production from these sources now accounts for approximately 45% of U.S. natural gas production, up from 27% in 2000. Improvements in drilling and completion technology will continue to increase the ability to economically drill for oil and gas in these difficult areas.

Anchor will continue to focus on complex drilling environments where our technical expertise and customized drilling fluids systems add the greatest value to onshore oil and natural gas operators. Anchor’s focus is centered on enhancing the productivity of onshore oil and natural gas operators. Specifically, Anchor’s drilling fluids systems and expertise allow operators to drill deeper and faster, reducing the overall cost and time required to drill. A reduction in drilling time results not only in savings related to rig day-rates, but also in enhanced well economics through bringing the revenue stream online sooner.

Anchor’s facility is located at 148 McIntyre Road, Minden, LA 71055-7214. For more about the beautiful town of Minden, see http://www.mindenusa.com.
